Is your video driving away customers and hurting
your sales?
You have only 3 seconds to make a first
impression. And first impressions count. They
often mean the difference between a sale - or not.
Online Videos: inspire
confidence, convince producers, and make sales. Whether
you're auditioning for a TV producer for a national
show, selling a product or service, or introducing
your website to new visitors, your online video is a
crucial element in your toolkit.
The Good News and The Bad News
The bad news is you could be driving
away customers, clients and visitors without even
knowing it. You may be doing and saying things
unconsciously that frighten people away instead of
drawing them to you and whatever you are offering. The
background of your video, the angles you use, how you
carry yourself, the way you speak, what you say, all
influence how your audience perceives you. There is a
science and psychology to the way people buy and
everything from your mannerisms to your clothes tell
people whether they like, trust, believe and will buy
from you. The good news is you can easily learn what
works and what doesn't in 10 short minutes. I'll show
you how.
Before & After Media Coaching From Susan Harrow
Before Video
Example of A Client doing a Cable TV Show
Here is Matthew's first TV interview. During our
consultation I advised him to stop wiggling and moving his
hands and arms to much, and instead and bring his energy
up to his face. I suggested that he wear a shirt that
didn't have a pattern and that didn't pooch out so it
looked like he had a big gut (he doesn't). I brought to
his attention that he laughed nervously and rambled off
topic when he got unexpected or pointed questions from the
host, even agreeing with her when he actually didn't. We
worked on tightening his sound bites, handling difficult
questions, shaping up his posture, and channeling nervous
energy into action with props.

Example of The Same Client Doing a 4
Minute Morning Show
After media coaching Matthew wore a more
snugly fitting shirt, created great rapport, kept his
answers short and to the point, and did an excellent job
using his props to illustrate a point. His posture is
upright and stable and he easily answered the hosts
follow up questions without fumbling. There is still
room for improvement here, but overall a solid
interview.

Video Content is King
More than 52% of Internet content
today is in the form of video. So if you're not
creating video you're missing out. And if you are you
want to make sure that it's helping vs. hurting your
business. You can get started simply with the Flip
camera which takes the tech headache out of wielding a
camera. But it's not the camera that matters, it is
what you're telling your audience about you and your
product through your face, body, words, and through
the background setting for your video.
The Setting
To create a video that works for you
not against you you'll need to choose the appropriate
medium. The setting should clearly convey the type of
business you're running. You'll want to make sure it
has the feeling you want to give your potential
customers and client. The setting should reinforce the
kind of impression you want to give the people
visiting your site.
Your Presence
We want to know who we are dealing
with. Close ups on your face let us see your
expression and illuminate your authenticity. Looking
directly at the camera gives us the sense that you're
speaking to us personally. It makes you inviting and
creates intimacy. This is a small gesture to begin a
relationship with your clients or customers, eye to
eye.
Your Level of Professionalism
It's easy to get a little sloppy if
you're filming in your own home or casual setting,
slouching, wearing wrinkled clothes. You're a
professional. Treat this like a media appearance where
you want your body language to read confident, calm
and believable. Who wants to buy from a slob?
Speak in Sound bites
Did you know that most producers make
a decision to have you on their TV shows in less than
30 seconds? They don't need to see much more than that
to know if you're mediagenic or not. Part of being a
good media guest - and being a credible business
person, is speaking succinctly. You'll need a tight
script that gets to your points in a brief and
entertaining way to hold the attention of your
audience, and win the confidence of a producer.
The First 3 Seconds are Crucial
Remember whether you want to pass the
producer's audition when they check out your video
online, or you want feedback on a past appearance so
you can be a regular guest, commentator, or trusted
expert on national TV shows, your first 3-30 seconds
on-camera matter.
"Count

After Media Coaching From Susan Harrow
Example of A Client Doing a Book Talk:
You can see Julia is casual, comfortable and creates
immediate rapport with her audience right from the
start. She tells a delicious story, uses humor and
pathos. We worked on how to develop instant rapport
with an audience, tell a tight story, and eliminate
body and facial language that made her
presence and presentation less powerful.
The challenge
As a Wall Street Journal reporter Julia was used to
making her subjects feel at home by using body
language that was non-threatening, and consequently
non-commanding or riveting. This is not appropriate
for speaking or media appearances.

York Times Bestselling Author of
The House of Mondavi
After Media Coaching From Susan Harrow
Example of a Client on Larry King Live
Notice how James jumps right in without hesitation and
says his sound bites crisply. That's because his
messages were honed after hours of media training where
we mapped out his stories and points in detail. He sits
comfortably and confidently and maintains eye contact
100% of the time. He's dressed immaculately with colors
that suit his coloring and style.
The challenge
Before our media coaching James' stories were much
longer and more elaborate. James' facial expressions and
body language were tighter and more tense. He's an
experienced speaker so he's used to telling 45 minute
instead of 20 second stories. Long stories have no place
on TV. We worked on being able to relax when under the
pressure of being seen live on a top national show.
Also, James was used to wearing more casual clothing
which would not have been appropriate for the Larry King
Live Show so we discussed what would work for this show.
