Worst Publicity Story #1
Copyright © 2002 - 2010 by Susan Harrow. All rights reserved.
I had a radio interview on the number one morning show on
the East Coast. My business partner draws the line in the
wee morning hours...she doesn't start her day until 10am.
So, if we wanted publicity I would be the one showing up for
the interview.
I had to be on the air at 5:30am Pacific Time. I had a party
to attend the night before and the next morning I got up at
7:30am with that nagging feeling that I was forgetting
something. I looked in my appointment book and to my horror,
noticed that I forgot to set the alarm for the interview!
ARGHHH!!!!!!
I called the station and got voicemail. My media assistant
was bummed, too! This reflects on her and she has other
clients she pitches to the same stations. Let's paste a big
loser sign on my forehead.
After I got over feeling bad, I went into solution. I
emailed the station and said I would do whatever it took to
make it right.
*** SUSAN'S NOTE: Excellent strategy. Always own up to your error
and offer a solution. ***
So, they asked me to do the interview again. I called my
assistant and told her to phone me 15 minutes before to
ensure I was awake and wish me well. I also told my
boyfriend to make sure we set the alarm.
*** SUSAN'S NOTE: Make sure you have a secure system in place so
that you can meet your commitments-especially when they fall
outside of your typical schedule.***
The alarm went off and the interview went great. I sent a
BIG thank you to the station and all is well!
*** SUSAN'S NOTE: Big gold star for sending a thank you note.
Even if you haven't blundered, a thank you note is in
order.***
